I am 600 feet underwater inside a steel cylinder not much bigger than a fuel oil tank, looking through a 6-inch porthole. Out of the murky mist a crab appears, oblivious of the hulking yellow submarine and its bright lights. We pass another crab, then another, then groups of tens and twenties appear in our dim headlights. Suddenly, we are looking at a wall of crabs, hundreds of them, as tall as the sub. “What the f**k is going on here?” I said. It is the most amazing sight I have ever seen, and I am the first person to ever see it. Dive with me into the depths of the ocean as we try to solve The Mystery of Crab Mountains.
